Slam Locks - A Prevention In Logistics Crime

By Larry Driver

Slam locks are responsible for locking vehicles in the advent of forgetful and just plain careless drivers. They work by automatically closing the door once closed.

Europe has a reputation for a high level of cargo crime. The EU has reported that European businesses lose eight million Euros each year. Organised criminal groups count for a large portion of this as their familiarity with the roads and routes make cargo crime a priority for such groups.

Criminals make logistics vehicles one of their prime targets. There are certain factors which makes them appealing to criminal groups not least being their relatively high level of accessibility when compared to such vehicles as trains or ships. Cargos are also prone to exposing opportunities to the criminal with the driver needing numerous rests and even overnight stay. Another advantage over other types of vehicles is the fact that there is a lot of profit potential in the form of the goods being transported.

Drivers are, of course, capable of human error and do display this fact from time to time. The good news is that this human error is at least minimised by slam locks which force the door closed once shut. Criminals do target drivers who forget to do so, so it safeguards such drivers.

The absolute minimum expectancy in terms of vehicle security on a long journey are slam locks or other advanced vehicle locking systems. There are numerous options available such as immobilers and advanced alarm systems to tighten up vehicle security. Although it does seem unfair that such investments need to be made to prevent the actions of criminals, when the value of the goods being carried is of an amount worth protecting, it is a wise and safe investment.
