The Joys of a Trip to Spain

While I can only travel on a limited basis due to time constraints, money, and other commitments, I love to do it as often as I possibly can. Seeing other parts of the world really lends some insight into the way we live here and the way others live around the world.

My goal is to visit as many countries as possible, yet there's one that I'd like to visit over and over if my lifestyle should allow me to. I love this country and consider it my second home at this point.

The country I speak of is Spain, a beautiful European nation that I hope to go back to within the next year. My trip there was one of the best of my life, and I'd like to tell you some more about this great destination.

Nestled in the southern part of Europe below France, Spain is one of the more unique European countries. The scenery is beautiful, but the way they live is what I find most intriguing.

If you're a fan of beaches, you'll appreciate the fact that there's water bordering two sides of the country. On the East is the Mediterranean Sea, with the Southern coast of the country separated by a body of water between Spain and Africa.

The South of the country is a great resort district, with beaches, nightlife, and some great restaurants. Malaga and Marbella are two destinations worth visiting, as is Mijas, a picturesque coastal town in the South.

My favorite part of Spain, though, was Madrid. Modern yet traditional and true to the Spanish culture's roots, this gave me the most authentic Spanish experience of any of the cities.

I kept very busy in Madrid. Between the delicious restaurants and pastry shops, not to mention some great theater and museums, I had a blast in the nation's capital.

I could go on and on about Spain, but I'll leave it at that. There are some great airfare and hotel deals out right now, and I would definitely suggest considering Spain if you plan on traveling soon.

How to Diagnose and Treat Equine Cushings Disease

Cushings disease occurs in horses, dogs and even people. However, the symptoms are different, depending on the species. In horses it results in increased hair growth (longer, thicker, curly) whereas in dogs it results in hair loss and even bald spots. The horse version of this illness is called ECD (Equine Cushings Disease).

As a horse ages, there is an increasing tendency for the pituitary gland to develop tumors or to grow too large, resulting in it producing more hormones. This in turn stimulates the adrenal glands to produce additional steroids and when the level of steroids becomes excessive it results in cushings. Since these changes are age related, ECD is most often found in horses over 15 years but has been found in horses as young as seven.

Cushings was first identified in explained in'21, by Dr. Cushing, after whom the disease is name. ECD is the equine variation of the disease first identified in humans by Dr. Cushing.

The most common symptom of ECD is coat changes (becoming curly, thicker, longer, failure to shed, lighter in color). Sweating tends to increase as a result of the heavier coat. There is muscle loss in the back and neck, even when the horse increases its food intake. Laminitis eventually develops. Diabetes usually develops, with the result that the horse drinks and urinates more than normal. Due to the immune system being depressed, the horse is more prone to infections and slower to heal from injuries. The depressions over the eyes tend to disappear due to fat deposits.

Any of these symptoms can be caused by a variety of illnesses other than ECD. Consequently, blood and urine tests are normally used to confirm that the cause is ECD (e.g. by measuring hormone levels and hormone response levels) and to rule out other possible diseases. Studies have shown that many horses with ECD are either not diagnosed or incorrectly diagnosed (the symptoms are incorrectly attributed to a different disease), with the result that they do not receive appropriate treatment.

Unfortunately it is not possible to cure ECD. However, one can slow the disease by the use of medication to reduce hormone production to normal levels. Note that some of these medications have strong side effects, so appropriate testing and control is required to prevent secondary illnesses (e.g. liver disease).

One also needs to watch for symptoms of secondary diseases, such as laminitis or diabetes, which are more common in horses with ECD. These need to be treated promptly to prevent them from further damaging the horse's health.

One should also maintain the horse's quality of life by treating any symptoms which make it uncomfortable. For example, if the heavier coat results in the horse becoming too warm, one should clip the coat in spring or summer.

In beat making, there exist two spatial factors that are often overlooked: time-sensitive density and swing. We'll be taking a look at the latter in this article, as there are a lot of beat makers who have not paid enough attention and have not applied the most basic principles of using swing on drum samples and instruments.

A lot of music producers (especially ones just coming into the game) will often question all the fuss about using swing on drum samples and other tracks in a beat. The answer given on a lot of forums and blogs is usually something like this: the human ear loves variance. If every drum beat was to fall on the exact time grid of quantization, it wouldn't sound very pleasing. This is also the reason concerts are so popular. We've heard all the great songs already - countless times - but hearing them with some variation in drums and vocals is very appealing! If the artist instead simply played their CDs for the audience while lip-syncing, it wouldn't be good at all. Not half as appealing as live instruments with the possibilities of mistakes.

When tapping out samples on hardware, the swing will act as some sloppy quantization. Not that sloppy, though, just enough to get you into the groove template. It's great for those not yet very accurate with tapping.

But what exactly is swing? Swing is, again, like quantization, but without the 100% timing. There are various styles of swing templates, with varying degrees of swing. A 50% swing, for instance, is no different than snap quantization, so it's not really swing at all. But moving beyond this, a 63% swing template, for example, is one which moves midi notes from the nearest quantization point by thirteen percent either way. The percentage is of the timing, so it would be thirteen percent of 1/16th note, if 1/16 was the timing selected.

Swing templates are especially useful when combining drum samples tracks with electronic instruments like synthesizers - these 'synths' do not have any swing applied to them by default (most of the time), so using a swing setting on them along with a straight drum track, or the other way around, can get you some good results. You can also just quantize the drum samples and the electronic synth and simply use a swing setting on one other sound in the song.

When beginning to use this type of technique in music production, you may want to start with template percentages of fifty one to sixty three percent. Try them out on drum samples first and just mute the other tracks. Un-mute and play the track back again. Getting to know the difference in your mind as well as in your ears is an important step, especially true when you're just starting to do this on your own. Move onto other instruments and try other percentages as you get more comfortable.

China's increasingly voracious investment in overseas markets is helping the global economy - and especially the economies of developing countries - recover from the financial crisis, according to several speakers at the First China Overseas Investment Fair Tuesday.

Chinese officials urged foreign countries to make it easier for that investment to continue to flow by creating a "convenient and fair" environment for Chinese investors. Outbound investment from China in overseas markets has grown significantly recently, at the same time as investment from traditional big spenders, including the United States and European countries, has slowed.

"China is stepping up its overseas efforts, despite the economic recession worldwide," said Zhang Xiaoqiang, vice-director of the National Development and Reform Commission. "Many of China's companies are active investors."

China's overseas direct investment rose'0 percent year-on-year in the third quarter, bringing the total investment for the first nine months to 32.87 bln U.S. dollars, the Ministry of Commerce announced recently.

That growth has been a blessing for many countries recently, Zhang said. Jon Huntsman, the US ambassador to China, agreed, saying China's investment was "important in improving and stimulating the world economy". Huntsman said the US has benefited from the investments of other nations. Between 2003 and 2008, countries invested more than 325 billion dollars in some 4,300 projects in the US.

Huntsman said China was "one of the nations with the fastest growing investment in the US" with an annual growth rate in investment volume of 30 percent throughout the 2004-to-2008 period.

"China is a leading nation in stimulating the revival of developing economies by way of investment," said Taffere Tesfachew, chief of the Office of the Secretary-General under the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.

Statistics from UNCTAD shows that in 2008, investment flowing out of the US declined by' percent to 312 billion. Flows from EU nations plunged by 30 percent to 837 billion. But emerging economies, and China in particular, increased overseas investment, Tesfachew told China Daily. Nations and regional areas throughout "Africa and Asia could benefit a lot from it," he added.

F. Marcelle Gairy, Grenada's ambassador to China, said: "We have great sunshine to grow plants and many other advantageous sectors to tap. China has good technology to realize our dreams." "It is win-win investment," she said. "China's technology is cheaper, innovative and very useful," added Mifzal Ahmed, advisor on investments for the Maldives' Ministry of Economic Development.

While the UNCTAD forecasts investment outflows from Asia will slow this year, the organization believes the region will still outperform the rest of the world. "Outflows from China and India are the most noteworthy," said Tesfachew.

Butchers blocks can be sanitized using a very dilute bleach solution. Keep the solution in a spray bottle for this purpose. Sanitize the board after each use and especially when switching from meats to vegetables. The board needs to be kept clean and dry at all times. You do not want your butchers block work board to absorb any of the juices from the meats or vegetables that you are cutting.

Oil finished butchers blocks can be resurfaced by sanding. This should not be necessary until after several years of use. Most butchers blocks are thick enough that the small amount of thickness lost to sanding does not affect their use. The province of Ontario, Canada, introduced a feed-in tariff in 2006, and ratified it in 2009, which proposed to boost payments for roof-top solar power from 42/kWh to 80/kWh. In April, 2009, eleven US State legislatures began considering implementing a FiT as an accompaniment to their renewable electricity mandates. Feed-In Tariffs have been linked with an increased development of solar power in Germany and Spain as well as wind power in Denmark.

Many experts say that the FiT program makes adopting renewal energy more financially attractive. The higher market price that is purchased by companies will be recouped by spreading it across all customer bills and it does not increase the bills by that much, usually by about 10 cents. The more customers a company has, the less money is added to customer's bills. The goal is to have a gradual transition from non renewable energy resources to renewable energy resources.

In Ontario, Canada, the government hopes to eliminate coal-fired electricity by the end of 2014, increase the development of renewable energy technologies, and create new green industries and jobs. The FIT Program was made possible by the Green Energy and Green Economy Act, 2009 which was passed into law on May 14, 2009. The Ontario Power Authority is responsible for implementing the program. It offers stable prices under long-term contracts for energy generated from renewable sources, including: biomass, biogas, landfill gas, on-shore and off-shore wind, solar photovoltaic (PV), and hydropower. It is the largest climate-change initiative in North America.

How to Liberate a Bow Arm

Today's message should be very helpful to you, IF, that is, you are like most violinists and can always use an insight on how keep your right arm technique sharp.

Most violinists have four main challenges when it comes to their bow-arm; keeping it straight, keeping it horizontal, achieving clean, non-disruptive string crossings, and coordinating changes of string and direction with the left hand.

Now, you may disagree with me. You may be thinking, "my biggest problem is with spiccato or martel - I can do all those other things."

If that's the case, I'd say, you'd be wise to pay attention, your spiccato difficulties may have more to do with these things than you think.

Today I'm just going to discuss the first two challenges - keeping the bow straight and keeping it horizontal. For most of us 'straight' is pretty well understood to mean parallel to the bridge. What's not so clear, in my experience, is the need for the components of the bow arm to facilitate the horizontal travel of the bow.

And for this to happen there are exactly 3 joints we have that must ALLOW this to happen - the wrist, the elbow and the shoulder.

Take the wrist - one of the most common no-nos I see is the RAISING of the wrist at the frog. Raising the wrist immediately takes one component of your bow-arm out of that horizontal plane of movement so necessary to an efficient, seamless bow arm.

So how should the wrist flex? The wrist must flex forward and remain within the 'plane of motion' the bow arm inhabits, while also maintaining the bow in a position parallel to the bridge.

This idea of staying in the plane of motion extends to the elbow as well. I see a lot of players introducing unnecessary complications to their bow-arm by elevating and lowering the elbow in the course of drawing a full bow.

And then they wonder why the bow 'chatters' on the string, or they have difficulty with quick string crossings and such. Well, there's just too much going on, and all that contrary energy is getting fed right into the bow stick.

Finally, there's the shoulder. How fresh is the memory of my father standing next to me tapping my shoulder to get it to relax during my early years of practice.

Though relaxed, the muscles in the shoulder must nonetheless control critical movements of the upper arm that comes into play at the lower part of the bow and during string crossings.

I'll talk more about string crossings tomorrow, yet for now it is important to understand that, although the shoulder is bearing the weight of the arm and bow, it must nonetheless be relaxed, since it plays a critical role in moving the bow straight and horizontally at the frog.

This is to say, you cannot confuse the vertical movements involved in string crossings with the lateral movements of the upper arm involved in bowing.

This morning I again made a worthwhile investment into my practice by playing Kreutzer Etude #2 at the extreme frog. You might be interested to know that for me to accomplish it, at tempo, from top to bottom with a really smooth detach bowing, I 'belly breathed' like a stallion in heat. You've got to keep the upper body absolutely relaxed to do this, and belly-breathing is a secret every violinist should know.
