Get A Fitted Kitchen And Save Time And Trouble

By Patricia Connor

In these tough economic times, we are all looking for ways to cut corners and save money. We often do little jobs around the house that formerly we may have left to tradesmen. Often, we can successfully do a little job like fix a leaky faucet, but sometimes we get stuck and make things worse. Installing a fitted kitchen is a perfect example of this.

When you observe a tradesman at work, their job can look deceptively easy. We are tempted to believe that we can do what they can do ourselves. Many of the basic jobs they do are easy and we probably could do them, just as their apprentices can. Other jobs, however, are much more difficult. We don't know how much skill is involved because the experts go about their work so quickly and with such efficiency.

When professional kitchen installers come into a home, many homeowners are surprised to see that the job only requires two people. They come in the morning and remove the old kitchen quickly and efficiently. Before lunchtime, they have removed the old kitchen and begun to install the floor cabinets of the new one. Often, these are in place and secured to the wall before they take their lunch break.

After lunch, depending on the type of kitchen, they may either install the bench top or install the hanging cabinets. Working together, they have those cabinets hung perfectly in no time at all. The casual observer notices how they use a prop to hold up the cabinets so they can work more easily.

Unless they run into something difficult or it's a very large kitchen, these two workers can often be finished with their side of the job in a single day. Everything is in place for the tiler, the plumber and the electrician. If they do have more work to finish, it's usually just little things they can tidy up the next morning.

The home DIY handyman thinks, "I can do that, too" and determines to do it on his own in his own home. He goes out and buys all the modules he needs for his kitchen and has them delivered to his home. He gets started, sure he can do the job alone and save money.

It all starts out fine. The floor cabinets go in and look just fine. But as the job progresses, he overlooks many crucial things. When he is finished, all those little mistakes add up to a kitchen that has gaps between cabinets and nothing is level.

Several little oversights add up to a big mess and the homeowner ends up having to get the kitchen installers to come and fix his mistakes. What started out as a weekend projects turns into a nightmare. In the end, most amateurs who tackle the job of fitting a kitchen end up wishing they had hired an expert!
